Origins of The Magician Tarot Card
In the earliest Italian tarot decks of the 15th century, this card was called Il Bagatto — ‘The Juggler’ or ‘The Mountebank’ — depicted as a street performer or market trickster displaying wares on a small table. He was a figure at the margins of society: clever, quick-handed, and a little slick.
It was Arthur Edward Waite and Pamela Colman Smith who elevated this figure into something far more serious. Their 1909 Rider-Waite-Smith depiction draws on Hermetic philosophy, showing the Magician as an initiate who’s mastered the four classical elements. Above his head floats the lemniscate — the infinity symbol — signaling mastery that transcends linear time. He wears a white robe beneath a red cloak: purity of purpose wrapped in passionate action.
The four tools on his table — cup, pentacle, sword, wand — correspond to the four suits of the Minor Arcana. They also refer to the four elements: water, earth, air, and fire. The Magician has access to all four, and he knows how to use them.
